O viaduto de Xabregas (e seus arcos)

Coloca-te comigo defronte da Fábrica de Tabacos — convida Norberto de Araújo — e contempla êste quadro pitoresco que nos é dado pelo desenho dos três viadutos sucessivos da linha férrea; ao fundo norte, sôbre a cortina de guarda da ponte na extrema da Rua da Madre de Deus, espreita a agulha da antiga igreja, e à nossa direita desenha-se a aguarela pobre de um mercado de ar livre, sob a fachada poente da Escola Profissional D. Maria Pia, no Largo da Marquesa de Niza.

Não me fatigo na repetição do fenómeno da paisagem social: tudo isto há dois séculos atrás era de feição conventual e nobre: o Palácio dos Marqueses de Niza, a um lado, o convento dos franciscanos de Santa Maria de Jesus, a outro. Sem linha férrea nem passagens sobre viadutos, sem edifícios fabris, armazéns e oficinas, sem cortinas de prédios a encobrir o rio — largo como um mar —, Xabregas, «Enxobregas» dos séculos velhos, era arrabalde, tímido de póvoas ao acaso, luminoso e lavado.
No século passado, aí por 1840, a transição estava feita. já to disse atráso silvo substituiu o sino, o americano› tomou o lugar das sejes, o fumo das chaminés confundiu o cheiro dos incensos e das flores dos jardins.
Mutação assim em parte alguma de Lisboa se verificou.¹

A gravura representa a ponte de Xabregas — pode ler-se no Archivo pittoresco datado de 1857 —, lançada enviesada a 33º 30' sobre a estrada publica. Compõe-se de três arcos. Dos dois do lado da trincheira, á direita, a gravura só representa o primeiro; são de pedra em arco de circulo, de 1,52 de flecha; 2,97m d'altura de pés direitos; e 6,85m de abertura de cada um. A abertura do arco do lado do aterro, á esquerda, que cobre a estrada propriamente dita, é de 15,58m, formado por 6 cambotas de ferro de forma abatida. A largura entre as testas da ponte é de 7,72m. A parte de ferro [substituída em 1954] é obra de Inglaterra [John Sutherland e Valentine C. L]. O espectador, colocado entre a ponte e a fonte da Samaritana, vê desfilar por sobre a ponte, em direcção á estação principal, um comboio; por cima correm os fios do telegrafo eléctrico; á direita, e próximo, sobressai, o angulo oriental do grande Palácio do Marquês de Niza; á esquerda, a pouca distancia, aparece a cruz, que remata o frontispício da igreja do convento da Madre de Deus. ²
